What does a suspended solids analyser measure?

The term can describe instruments with different samples, methods and purposes. The correct route depends on whether you need a selected operational check, continuous process measurement or a laboratory reference result.

Portable

Collected-sample operational checks

Online

Continuous or frequent process measurement

Laboratory

Reference and compliance methods

Match the analyser to the job.

Start with the sample point, expected concentration, result frequency and decision. The specification checklist helps turn those requirements into a consistent comparison.

Mixed-liquor monitoring

For activated-sludge process checks, operators may need a timely MLSS result from a representative process sample. Confirm that expected and unusual concentrations sit within the instrument’s specified range.

Settlement behaviour

MLSS alone does not show how sludge settles. Where SVI, settled sludge level, supernatant clarity or floating sludge matter, choose a workflow that records settlement results as well as concentration.

Effluent and compliance

Final-effluent monitoring and compliance testing have different requirements. Follow the approved method and reporting obligations rather than assuming an operational analyser can replace them.

Where the S3A fits.

The S3A is a portable, sample-based suspended solids settlement analyser for routine activated-sludge checks. It combines a rapid MLSS result with an unattended 30-minute settlement cycle.

01 / Concentration

MLSS from a compact sample

A representative 210 ml sample produces an MLSS result in approximately 10 seconds. The specified range is 50 to 6,500 mg/L, with stated accuracy of ±10%.

02 / Settlement

A complete 30-minute cycle

The same test records SVI, settled sludge level, supernatant clarity and floating sludge. An optional stirrer supports SSVI and stirred settled sludge level.

Understand the measurement boundary.

The S3A is designed for safe-area operational checks. It is not a continuous online analyser and does not replace required final-effluent or laboratory compliance testing.

Compare sample method, measurement role, range, records and limitations before choosing an instrument. The category name alone does not establish suitability.
