TSS vs MLSS: choosing a suspended solids analyser

Separate the sample, measurement purpose and process decision before comparing total suspended solids and mixed liquor suspended solids instruments.

The terms overlap, but the application is different.

TSS is a broad suspended-solids measurement used across water and wastewater samples. MLSS describes suspended solids in the mixed liquor of an activated-sludge process. Product searches can show both, even when the instruments serve different operating roles.

Start with the sample and the decision.

A suspended solids analyser should be selected for the actual material, concentration range, frequency and decision it needs to support. Similar search phrases do not make online, laboratory and portable sample-based methods interchangeable.

What is being sampled?

Identify whether the material is mixed liquor, final effluent or another process sample. For the S3A, a representative activated-sludge sample within the published MLSS range is required.

How often is a result needed?

An installed online instrument can provide continuous or frequent measurements at one process point. A portable analyser tests collected samples at selected locations and times.

What decision will it support?

Separate routine operational checks from required compliance work. Use the approved sampling and laboratory method where final-effluent or regulatory reporting requires it.

Why MLSS is only part of the S3A result.

Concentration does not by itself describe settlement behaviour. The S3A adds a 30-minute sample-based settlement cycle after the rapid MLSS measurement.

01 / Concentration

MLSS in approximately 10 seconds

The S3A specified MLSS range is 50 to 6,500 mg/L with stated accuracy of ±10%, using a representative 210 ml activated-sludge sample.

02 / Settlement

Connected observations from the same sample

The completed cycle records SVI, settled sludge level, supernatant clarity and floating sludge. Optional stirred results require the stirrer module.

Do not treat TSS and MLSS as interchangeable labels.

Use the terminology that matches the sample and method. The S3A is a safe-area operational instrument for activated-sludge MLSS and settlement checks, not a continuous online TSS monitor or a replacement for required compliance testing.

For broader method context, see the US EPA definition of total suspended solids and its activated-sludge process factsheet. Confirm the applicable site procedure and any critical requirement with PMA before specification.

Follow the right route from terminology to product.

The category guide, MLSS application page and product specifications connect the broad search term to the S3A’s actual role.
