This comparison explains the different roles without treating either approach as universally better. It also shows where the portable S3A fits routine activated-sludge testing.
The quick distinction
A portable analyser measures a collected sample at selected times and locations. An online analyser is installed at a defined process point to produce continuous or frequent measurements as part of an operating system.
Those workflows create different evidence. A portable result depends on representative sampling and consistent preparation. An online result depends on installation, calibration, cleaning, maintenance and the suitability of the measuring point.
Start with the decision you need to make, then specify the measurement method, range and records needed to support it.
Choose a portable approach when…
1. You need to compare several locations
One instrument can be taken to agreed sampling points, helping operators compare lanes, tanks or operating periods without installing a separate sensor at each location.
2. Settlement behaviour matters
If the operational question includes SVI, settled sludge level, supernatant clarity or floating sludge, choose a workflow that records those results as well as suspended-solids concentration.
3. The test is part of an operator round
A sample-based method can fit planned process checks where operators already collect representative samples and record supporting site observations.
4. Installation access is limited
A portable analyser can avoid permanent sensor installation, but safe sampling access and a consistent sampling procedure are still essential.
5. You need a defined sample test
A collected sample can be tested under a repeatable method. Record the sampling location, time, process condition and whether the settlement test was stirred or unstirred.
6. You need to verify several operating conditions
Portable testing can support planned checks across different conditions, provided the sample range and instrument specification match the application.
Choose an online approach when…
Continuous or frequent process measurement is required
The measurement needs to feed an alarm or control response
One installed sampling point represents the decision being made
The site can support installation, calibration and routine cleaning
The process range and measurement technology are suitable
The signal and communications fit the control system
Maintenance access and ownership are defined
The operational value justifies a permanent measurement point
Where the portable S3A fits
The S3A uses a representative 210 ml activated-sludge sample. It provides an MLSS result in approximately 10 seconds across its specified 50 to 6,500 mg/L range, with stated accuracy of ±10%.
It then completes a 30-minute settlement cycle unattended for SVI, settled sludge level, supernatant clarity and floating sludge. An optional stirrer supports SSVI and stirred settled sludge level.
The instrument stores up to 28 completed results for each of three locations with date and time information. Optional MODBUS RTU over two-wire RS-485 allows a compatible client system to poll supported readings. Specify the option when ordering; PMA can confirm the data and integration required. Dashboards and network integration are configured by the client.
Continuous data and selected sample tests answer different questions
An online trend can show how a signal changes through time at one installed point. A portable test can compare chosen locations and add settlement behaviour from a collected sample. Some sites may use both approaches for different operational purposes.

Use search terms carefully when comparing products
Compare the measurement method rather than assuming similarly named instruments are interchangeable.
Terms such as suspended solids, total suspended solids, MLSS, portable meter and online monitor can lead to products with different intended roles. Confirm the sample type, range, output, test duration and operating environment.

The S3A is for safe-area operational wastewater-treatment checks. It is not a continuous online analyser or a substitute for required final-effluent compliance testing. Contact PMA to discuss application suitability.
