Start with the test you need.
A useful specification starts with the operational question. Do you need a rapid solids-concentration check, an unattended settlement test, or both? Review the measurement method as well as the instrument’s headline features.
MLSS
Solids concentration
SVI and SSL
Unstirred settlement
SSVI and SSSL
Optional stirred testing
Three checks before you specify.
Define the sample range, the required settlement method and how operators will compare results. These checks help you assess whether the S3A fits your routine without treating every solids instrument as interchangeable.
Check the sample range
The S3A has a specified MLSS range of 50 to 6,500 mg/L and stated accuracy of ±10%. Compare that range with representative samples from your process, including the conditions you need to investigate.
Confirm the test method
The standard workflow provides unstirred SVI and SSL. SSVI and SSSL require the optional stirrer. Specify the method used in your site procedure so that new results remain comparable with existing records.
Plan the records
The S3A stores up to 28 completed results for each of three locations, with date and time information. Check that this arrangement suits your sampling points. If wider data access is required, specify optional MODBUS RTU over RS-485 when ordering and confirm the required readings and client integration with PMA.
Separate test time from operator time.
The S3A’s rapid MLSS reading and unattended settlement cycle serve different purposes. Automation does not turn a 30-minute settlement test into a 10-second test; it allows the operator to continue other work during settlement.
01 / Concentration
A rapid MLSS result
A representative 210 ml sample produces an MLSS result in approximately 10 seconds. Consider how samples will be collected and prepared consistently across operators and shifts.
02 / Settlement
A complete 30-minute cycle
The analyser then records SVI, SSL, supernatant clarity and floating sludge after the settlement cycle. Read these together and retain the test method, location and time when comparing results.
Check suitability with PMA.
Bring your expected MLSS range, sampling locations, current test procedure and required results to the discussion. If your procedure calls for stirred testing, include that requirement at the specification stage.
The S3A is for operational checks in safe-area wastewater-treatment environments. It is not a continuous online or final-effluent monitor and does not replace required compliance testing.
Review the evidence behind your choice.
Use the product details, measurement explanations and support information to prepare a focused specification. Work through the suspended solids analyser specification checklist, and ask PMA to confirm any requirement that is not stated in the published product information.
