Portable MLSS analyser for activated sludge

Measure mixed liquor suspended solids from a representative 210 ml sample, then continue into a 30-minute settlement test with the same portable S3A instrument.

A sample-based MLSS route for treatment works.

MLSS is an operational concentration measurement for activated-sludge process checks. The S3A combines that rapid result with settlement observations, helping operators review concentration and settling behaviour together.

Specified MLSS range

What to check before choosing an MLSS analyser.

A useful comparison needs more than a headline range. Confirm the sample, expected operating conditions, measurement routine, calibration responsibility and how completed results will be recorded.

Representative sampling

Choose a safe sampling point that represents the mixed liquor being assessed. Keep location, timing and preparation consistent when comparing routine results.

Range and accuracy

The S3A specified MLSS range is 50 to 6,500 mg/L, with stated accuracy of ±10%. Confirm that routine and unusual samples fall within the published range.

Calibration and records

Calibrate using a site-specific sample with known MLSS between 2,000 and 4,000 mg/L, and repeat after large changes in sludge characteristics. The S3A stores up to 28 completed results for each of three locations, with date and time information.

Where the portable S3A fits.

The S3A is intended for safe-area operational checks at activated-sludge wastewater treatment works. It provides MLSS first, then completes an unattended settlement cycle.

01 / Rapid result

MLSS from one compact sample

Fill the S3A tube with a representative 210 ml sample. The analyser reports MLSS in approximately 10 seconds across its specified range.

02 / Connected settlement data

Continue the same test for 30 minutes

The cycle records SVI, settled sludge level, supernatant clarity and floating sludge. The optional stirrer supports SSVI and stirred settled sludge level.

Understand the measurement boundary.

The S3A is not a continuous online monitor and does not replace required final-effluent or laboratory compliance testing. Optional MODBUS RTU over two-wire RS-485 allows a compatible client system to poll supported readings. Specify the option when ordering; PMA can confirm the data and integration required. Dashboards and network integration are client-provided; the connection does not turn a sample test into continuous process monitoring.

The instrument category alone does not establish suitability. Check the measurement method and intended application.
